Prof. Yang Qixun

Prof. Yang Qixun. He is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and the pioneer in the field of power system micro-processor based protection and automation in China.


Prof. Yang was born in Shanghai, China. He received his electrical engineering degree from Zhejiang University, China and his PhD from the University of New South Wales, Australia in 1982.

From 1960 to 1979 he was a lecturer in North China Electric Power University. In 1984, after returning from his PhD studies, he developed the first microprocessor based protection in China. In 1986 he was awarded the "Science and Technology Elite" by the government of Hebei province, China, and "Youth Technologist of the Outstanding Contribution" by the Chinese government. In 1987 he became a Professor in North China Electric Power University (NCEPU). In 1990 he developed the second generation microprocessor based protection using multi-CPU hardware. In 1994 he developed the third generation protection and awarded “Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering”. Prof. Yang has authored more than 80 papers and a book named “Basics of Microprocessor Based Protection”.

In 1994 Prof. Yang became the CEO of a Chinese-American company - Hathaway Sifang Protection and Control Company Ltd., which he set up. Since 2006 he was the Chairman of the Board of Sifang Electric Group. On 10 Sep.2012, “Outstanding Contribution Award Fund of Sifang Talent”was set up. To support Sifang’s talent development strategy, Prof. Yang donates all the cash dividend income of his equity held as a natural person and future stock right transfer to this fund permanently since that date.
